Kuomboka Ceremony

The Kuomboka ceremony is celebrated by the Lozi community in western Zambia. The term "Kuomboka" means "to rise from the water to dry land" in Silozi. This ceremony marks the annual move of the King of the Lozi, the Litunga, and his court from the flooded Barotse Plain (Zambezi River) to higher land.

The centerpiece of the ritual is the magnificent journey of the Litunga in an elaborately carved, huge royal barge, the Nalikwanda, accompanied by around 80 rowers. The festive procession is accompanied by drums, songs and dances and attracts many spectators from near and far.

Tens of thousands of spectators (the estimate in 2024 was around 200,000 to 250,000 spectators) await the king on the other bank. All in their colorful costumes - men, women and children!

We use motorized rafts to escape the crowds. We also have more freedom of movement on the water to find the best places. We travel with the Lozi king in the boats to his final destination!

Afterwards we visit Liuwa National Park, which is only about 100 km away. Around 55,000 wildebeest are gathered on the Liuwa plain at this time. The predators (lions, hyena dogs and hyenas) are also present. The bird life is also extremely diverse at this time. We spend 3 nights in this natural paradise.

Rafting operation will stay open this season due to the relatively low water level of the Zambezi River. We are currently running the High Water Rafting trips (rapids #14-25).

Low Water Rafting Season has started

Finally the water level of the Zambezi River has dropped considerably so we are able to start our rafting trips from rapid #1.
All Low water rafting options are available again: Full Day Rafting (rapids 1-21), 'Test the Best' (rapids #1-7), Half Day Morning (rapids #1-13) and Half Day afternoon (rapids #13-21).
Included in our rates are the return transfers and the video of the day.
We will also start with 'Swimming under the Falls' very soon!

Zambia lifts restriction for entering the country

Happy days for all travelers to Zambia! All Covid-19 related travel restrictions for entry into Zambia have been lifted with immediate effect: so no proof of vaccination, negative PCR Test or recovery certificate is necessary any longer for entering the country.

Day 1: Lusaka – Kafue National Park: Leave Lusaka in the early morning to drive to Kafue National Park. Camping on the banks of the Kafue River. (-/L/D)

Day 2, 3 and 4: Chunga (central Kafue National Park): We have 3 whole days to do game viewing in the Park. Several small rivers cross this area. These leave a number of waterholes in the dry season for the animals to quench their thirst. Wild dogs, which roam large areas of the park, cheetah and lion are among the inhabitants here. Camping on the banks of the Kafue (3x FB)

Day 5: Ithezi-Thezi (Southern Kafue Park):After a morning drive in the central Kafue Park we head south to Lake Ithezi-Thezi. Game drives in this area of the park. Camping next to the lake. (FB)

Day 6: Livingstone: Driving via Nanzhilla Plains through Kafue National Park and carry on to Livingstone. There are a lot of activities on offer: white water rafting, sundowner drift, canoeing, swimming under the Victoria Falls and Devil’s Pool and much more. Drop off at your accommodation in town or airport in Livingstone in the early afternoon (B/-/-).

New Visa Regulation for Zambia

Good news for all visitors planning a safari.

The Zambian Government has cut the tourist visa fees to only US 25 per person (from US 50 pp) for a sinlgle entry and to US 40 per person (from US 80 pp) for a double entry.

Apart from that the KAZA Uni Visa for US 50 pp is still available and entitles visitors to enter Zambia and Zimbabwe as often as they wish within 30 days as well as visit Botswana for a day trip.

Nationals of SADC countries are exempted from any visa fee.

Clarification of entry requirements to Zambia

Zambia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs circulated a revision to the tourism industry on 28 May 2021, clarifying the Covid-19 testing and quarantine requirements at point of entry for our visitors deemed from "High Risk" countries.

Please take note of the below protocols when traveling to Zambia:

All scheduled and non-scheduled international flights to all Airports are open.
All passengers coming from international flights need to present negative SARS CoV-2 PCR test result. The test should be conducted within the previous 72 hours.
Entry screening will be conducted at all airports. All travelers entering the airport will be subjected to temperature and symptom screening.
In addition to the above, all travelers deemed from "High Risk" Countries will be tested for Covid-19 by PCR test upon arrival into Zambia (approx USD$50.00 per person subject to change, payable by the traveler). The revision states that travelers who receive a negative result or have proof of vaccine will be exempt from 14 day mandatory quarantine.
Transit through one of the red listed countries (important for arrivals via Ethiopia, Kenya and South Africa) is allowed without any additional PCR Test
The list of "High-Risk" countries that will be required to undergo SARS CoV-2 PCR testing on arrival are as follows - as stated by Ministry of Foreign Affairs & ZNPHI. The list will be reviewed and updated regularly

As the water level of the Zambezi River is going down, we are prepared to start the new rafting seaon very soon. Our Bundu Team has recieved their Covid-19 vaccine and all other Covid-19 protocol will be strictly followed, so we are happy to announce that we can guarantee a safe rafting experience - also from the health aspect.

Seasonal Closure of Zambezi White Water Rafting

Due to the heavy rainfalls in the last couple of weeks, the water level of the Zambezi River is very high and still rising continously. We have to stop our white water rafting operation with immediate effect and plan to be open for rafting again in May.

In the meantime we are open for canoeing trips, raft safaris and river floats on the upper Zambezi River above the Victoria Fall, a great and relaxing way to spend the day!

After a long lock down - also due to the extremely high water level this year - we are happy to announce that the Zambezi River has dropped substanially so we will start the rafting season as from 11.6.2020.

Our staff members have received training in the nature and severity of COVID-19 and related viruses to ensure the safety of themselves and our guests, including rules around the washing of hands, practising social distance and the use of personal protective equipment.
